Consensys and ClearToken plan 24/7 wholesale settlement

Consensys and UK market infrastructure group ClearToken announced a partnership on October 8 to help banks settle tokenised assets and cash around the clock. Their plan connects blockchain technology with market infrastructure designed to provide legal settlement finality.

  • Announced: October 8, 2026.
  • Target: settlement on a 24/7/365 basis.
  • ClearToken’s payment and settlement service went live in December 2025.

According to the Consensys announcement, the firms will combine Consensys’s blockchain interoperability and tokenisation technology with ClearToken’s clearing and settlement framework. Financial markets already trade tokenised assets across networks, but post-trade infrastructure must also operate continuously for those assets to settle at any hour.

FOW’s report also describes the agreement as a push to develop round-the-clock clearing and settlement for tokenised assets and cash in wholesale markets.

How would the settlement system work?

ClearToken says eligible securities held at different banks could be tokenised and recognised as one fungible instrument. The firms aim to settle them on a delivery-versus-payment basis, exchanging securities for cash in the same transaction.

The cash leg could use fiat currency, tokenised deposits or stablecoins. Consensys says it will connect banks, brokers and asset managers across blockchain networks and financial market infrastructure in a private and compliant way.

What regulatory steps remain open?

ClearToken CSD Limited has passed Gate 2 of the Bank of England’s Digital Securities Sandbox, with approval to conduct depository activity in a live environment subject to conditions. ClearToken Depository Limited, which the announcement identifies as the group’s payment institution, is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority.

The broader clearing route is not yet confirmed as authorised. Consensys President David Cunningham said ClearToken’s plan for 24/7 clearing and settlement remains subject to Bank of England clearing authorisation. ClearToken CCP Limited has applied to the Bank for authorisation as a central counterparty.

What has the partnership delivered so far?

The announcement sets out an intended infrastructure and technology partnership; it does not report a launch date for the proposed wholesale settlement service or name a bank using it. ClearToken’s existing payment and settlement service went live in December 2025 for digital assets and fiat currencies, according to the company.
