Do You Need Gas on the Destination Chain After a Swap?

Usually, you do not need destination-chain gas just to receive tokens from a bridge swap, but you will need it to use them afterward unless the route covers that cost. The distinction is who submits the next transaction: your wallet or a relayer.

A guide to how relay bridges handle cross-chain swaps explains how a relayer can carry out steps on the destination chain. That can let a route deliver the target asset without asking you to hold the destination chain’s gas token before the swap.

When do I need destination-chain gas?

You need gas when your wallet submits a transaction on the destination chain. Sending the received token, swapping it again, approving a token contract, or bridging it onward normally requires the chain’s gas token to pay validators.

Receiving the bridged asset is different. The bridge or its relayer can complete that delivery as part of the route, so your wallet may show the tokens even if it has no native gas token. Without gas, those tokens can sit in the wallet until you fund it or use a supported sponsored transaction.

Does a bridge swap include destination gas?

Sometimes. A route may pay a relayer to execute the destination swap or bundle a small gas top-up into the transfer. In other routes, the quote covers only delivery of the asset, leaving you to pay for any later transaction yourself.

Fees can be collected on the source chain, deducted from the amount received, or paid through a separate destination-chain balance. Read the quote’s fee breakdown and check whether it names destination execution or a gas top-up. “Fee included” alone does not tell you whether your wallet will have spendable gas afterward.

What should I check before bridging?

Decide what you want to do once the tokens arrive. If you only need to receive and hold them, destination gas may not be needed immediately. If you plan to trade, transfer, or bridge again, confirm how that first follow-up transaction will be funded.

  • Check the destination network and the asset the route will deliver.
  • Look for destination execution, relayer, or gas top-up details in the quote.
  • If no top-up is included, arrange a small balance of the destination chain’s gas token.

The practical rule is simple: a bridge swap can get tokens into your wallet without destination gas, but it does not automatically make them usable. Check the route’s fee details before sending, and plan for gas if you will need to transact after arrival.
