Swiss investors have had access to Bitcoin-linked exchange-traded products, but those products are legally debt securities rather than investment funds.
Switzerland’s financial regulator FINMA approved its first exchange-traded fund that invests directly in Bitcoin, creating a fund-law route to Bitcoin exposure for retail investors. The FINMA announcement on October 20 classifies it as an “other fund for alternative investments” with specific risk.
- Approval announced: October 20, 2026
- Earlier FINMA crypto fund approval: 2021, for qualified investors
- Expected trading start for the newly named fund: November
Which fund received approval?
BIT Asset Management’s Bitcoin Fund ETF, ticker BBIT, received approval, according to The Block’s report, updated after the company confirmed the approval. The fund is expected to begin trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange in November.
FINMA’s announcement did not identify the issuer. The regulator said other providers had also submitted or announced applications for Bitcoin ETFs, so further approvals remain possible.
How does the approval change Bitcoin access?
The approval allows a retail fund to invest directly in Bitcoin under Swiss fund law. Existing Swiss Bitcoin ETPs are debt securities, while this product is an investment fund subject to fund rules.
FINMA granted an exemption from applicable risk-diversification rules, citing Bitcoin’s long trading history and comparatively high trading volume. It also said supervised institutions must reduce operational and custody risks, and fund documents must clearly explain the risks.
What risks and details remain?
FINMA says Bitcoin remains highly risky, including when held through an approved ETF. Its volatility could cause investors to lose a significant amount of their capital.
The approval is confirmed, and the fund’s identity was later confirmed by its manager. The November start is an expectation reported by The Block; FINMA’s announcement did not give a trading date. Other providers’ applications are also unresolved.
