Dogecoin Labs joins MyDoge, DogeOS and Such App under one company

Created in 2013, Dogecoin now has a company focused on building products around its currency. Dogecoin Labs launched on Oct. 21 with the Dogecoin Foundation’s partnership, bringing MyDoge, DogeOS and merchant payments tool Such App under one organization.

  • Three products: MyDoge, DogeOS and Such App.
  • More than 500,000 MyDoge users, according to the company.
  • DogeOS public testnet opened on Sept. 30.

According to the Dogecoin Labs announcement, CEO Jordan Jefferson will lead the independent organization. Intellectual property and development teams from the Foundation and House of Doge are joining it.

What will the three products do together?

The plan links application development, access to users and merchant payments. Developers can build on DogeOS, MyDoge can connect its wallet users to apps, and Such App provides tools for merchants to accept DOGE.

Such App’s beta supports invoices and in-person QR payments. The Labs announcement says an integration with DogeOS is planned, which would connect those merchant tools to its application ecosystem.

What remains open about DogeOS?

DogeOS has a public testnet for developers, but its consumer applications are not yet established. CoinDesk reported that featured apps were still marked “coming soon” in the public guide.

The link that would let Dogecoin’s blockchain verify DogeOS applications also remains unfinished, CoinDesk reported. A proposed rule change is still in draft form, so the testnet launch does not confirm that Dogecoin itself currently secures those applications.

How does the Foundation fit in?

The Foundation will continue its open-source development support, advocacy and community work, while Labs focuses on products and commercial opportunities, according to the announcement. The arrangement joins the teams under one business while leaving the Foundation’s stated stewardship role in place.

Whether the combined products attract developers, merchants and DOGE users remains to be seen. The confirmed launch sets out the structure and existing test tools; it does not yet show broad adoption of applications or payments.
